1. The Peafowl (Bird) Technically, "peacock" applies only to the male bird, females are called "peahens," and collectively they are peafowl. They belong to the pheasant family (Phasianidae). There are three distinct species found globally: • Indian Peafowl (Pavo cristatus): The most recognizable blue peacock, native to India and Sri Lanka. It is famously celebrated as the national bird of India. • Green Peafowl (Pavo muticus): Native to Southeast Asia (such as Java and Myanmar). It features striking green and gold plumage but is unfortunately classified as an endangered species. • Congo Peafowl (Afropavo congensis): A subtle, secretive species native to the African rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Key Features: • The Train: The male's signature "tail" is actually made of elongated upper tail coverts. These feathers feature brilliant, microscopic structures that reflect light to create iridescent "eyespots" (ocelli) used to attract mates during courtship. • Behavior: They are heavy-bodied omnivores that eat seeds, insects, and small reptiles. While they forage on the ground during the day, they fly up into high trees to sleep safely at night.
